  1. Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute without browning.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, sugar, salt, and red pepper flakes if using.
  4. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in chopped fresh basil and black pepper.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving over pasta or as desired.
